Belle tells BGKI about her style…

What inspires you to blog?

My Blog is primarily inspired by Natural hair, however it has expanded to include fashion, beauty and highlighting inspiring people such as fashion editors, bloggers & musicians

How would you define your personal style?

It changes so often, at the moment I like to keep things quite minimal and focus on one key piece usually focusing on texture and colour (I love Batik, Animal print & chunky knitwear), but I also like to mix prints and i love vintage cuts, so though the term is over used I have an “ecletic” style

Do you find that you follow fashion trends, or do you play by your own rules?

I like to keep my eye on the trends and adapt it to my own style i love the challenge of finding a key piece from the season at an affordable price.

Items to get, what are you searching for right now?

  • A Batik clutch bag
  • Pyjamas
  • Vintage americana fabric for making head wraps for spring/summer

Are there any colors you tend to shy away from, and if so why?

No colors are out of bounds for me…perhaps white but on for pratically of keeping it clean

When you hear the term “Black Girl Killing It” what comes to mind?

Its an extremely powerful phrase, I think of sisters marching to the beat of thier own drum

As a child were you always into clothes or did you grow into your own fashion sense?

I was always into clothes, whether I was dressing barbie or myself, I was a teen in the 1990’s so I was obsessed with clueless and blossom

Do you participate in your local fashion scene?

I live in London, one of the fashion capitals of the world and I’m an avid voyeur

How does your day to day life factor into your wardrobe choices?

I work in a hair salon, so it is quite free, I do not have to dress corporatly we are actively encouraged to dress up

What is your greatest fashion pet peeve?

Bodycon

Have you ever tried your hand at design or sewing?

I’m in the process of designing my first bag collection

Are there any designers that you like to wear or whose clothing stands out with you?

Jason Wu, I love the cuts and the girly touches his collection are always elegant and really stand out for me, however I love high street fashion, whistles, Reiss and Zara are my favourites.

Who are your style icons?

Editor of Wonderland magazine Julia Sarr Jamois, Effortless.

Your five must-haves as a girl:

  • Fabric for head wraps
  • Light wash Denim
  • Ankle boots
  • White Vests
  • Heels

What really stood out in the genre was women of color acting like heroes rather than depicting nannies or maids. We were redefining heroes as schoolteachers, nurses, mothers, and street-smart women who were proud of who they were. They were far more aggressive and progressive than the Hollywood stereotypes.”
